Hardest.Question.Ever.

This morning I found myself humming the words to singer Joe’s song “All The Things Your Man Won’t Do”.  This was a good song.  There’s no two ways about it.

But was it a great song?  I’m inclined to think that it had greatness potential.  But then it went away and nobody remembers that song unless its playing somewhere.  Just like Silk’s first album, Lose Control.  Everybody remembers their song “Meeting In My Bedroom” from their second (or third…whatever) album, but every damn song on Lose Control was top shelf, pal.

Unlike T.I.’s “Whatever You Like”…that’s not top shelf.  Ask L-O.  He’ll tell you.

But even those songs pale in comparison to some of the love songs of the 60s and 70s.  Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” kicks rocks on most of the songs from the current crop note-wranglers.  So this got me to thinking.  And you know what happens when a brother like myself starts thinking.

I start pondering.  And thoughting.  And ruminating.

This evening I was driving back home from out in Maryland and R. Kelly’s song “Honey Love” came on.  Now that song was meant for gettin’ your Clarence Carter on.  But above all else, it was just a good song that seemed innocent enough.  But we all know that his mind was telling him nooooooooooo, but his body had the Verizon Network.  So I delved further and realized that R. Kelly is responsible for some of the greatest love songs of our generation (“Like That” is a personal favorite).

Another random thought:  Most of us wouldn’t be here if not for music.  Believe it or not, your parents probably got their monkeystroke on with some Isley Brothers “Between The Sheets” playing in the background.  They just don’t tell us so that they don’t ruin these songs for us.

So, now that you’ve firmly been taken to “so what’s the point” land – here is the point.  What is the best love song?  This is one of the hardest questions to answer because there have been so many love songs.  Hell, I can’t even come up with my own definitive greatest love song.

But I can tell you this, I do have one song that if a chick I was dating told me she didn’t like it, she’d have to go.  Like for real.  The song?

Con Funk Shun’s – Straight From The Heart.  I’d straight drop a chick if she told me the song wasn’t good.  I’d do the same with Donny Hathaway.

So falks, who are celebrating this Friday like its your last, what is the best love song ever?  And similarly, is there a song that you’d cut somebody back for?  Basically, what’s “your” song?

(And don’t worry, I’m gonna be coming up with my own too.)
