Should My Expat Friend And I Get Back Together?
On the one hand, if I say no I will be miserable, and we have probably grown, perhaps we are ready to give it another go?
Three years ago, I was in a long term relationship with an expat guy. He eventually dumped me for somebody else. He said he still loved me, but that he wasn’t in love with me anymore. It broke me, but I eventually picked up the pieces and sort of moved on. He dated this other expatriate person for a year and a half, and then he broke up with her. While they were together, his new gf harassed me because she didn’t feel secure in the reltionship (I know that because she admitted it), although I had completely removed myself from the life of the guy. Now he has been single for like another year and a half.

I had to ask him a professional favor recently, so we had coffee and ended up hooking up. I fell for him again, but wasn’t planning to act on it. Then he gave me a call and said he still loved me, and asked me to get back together. He attributes his breaking up with me in the past to being fed up with the situation (at the time we lived a few hours apart, but not anymore) and not me. He wants to get back together with me.
I am torn about this. On the one hand, if I say no I will be miserable, and we have probably grown, perhaps we are ready to give it another go? On the other hand, I haven’t forgotten what it was like to have to abruptly leave his life only to see him happy with somebody else from afar. I really, really don’t want to make the same mistake twice. What should I do?
